What are bridges?

Dental bridges are fixed appliances which are used for replacing one or more adjacent missing teeth by gaining support from the natural teeth or an implant on either side of the missing tooth gap. The artificial teeth, known as the pontics, are attached to crowns at both ends, which rest on the prepared supporting teeth or are implanted on both sides.

What are the different types of bridges?

At Buckden Dental, we offer three different types of bridges:

Conventional bridges – these bridges are attached with supporting teeth on both sides. These bridges are usually reserved for replacing teeth which receive heavy chewing forces.
Cantilever bridges – these bridges are supported only at one end. Since they are not as strong as conventional bridges, they are used for replacing front teeth, which do not receive very heavy masticatory forces.
Maryland bridges – also known as resin-retained bridges, they consist of metal wings on both sides, which are bonded to the inner surface of supporting teeth with an adhesive cement. One of the better things about these bridges is that they do not require any preparation of the supporting teeth. However, they can only be used for replacing front missing teeth.

Who can benefit from bridges?

At Buckden Dental, we recommend dental bridges for the correction of the following cosmetic and restorative dental problems:

Single missing tooth – a 3-unit bridge can be used to replace a single missing tooth. We will use the conventional bridge for replacing a back tooth, while a cantilever or a Maryland bridge for replacing a front tooth, which lies in the cosmetic zone.
Multiple missing teeth – we use conventional bridges for replacing up to 3 or 4 missing adjacent teeth. They are also useful when we replace multiple adjacent teeth with dental implants.
Replacing old dentures – if you are not satisfied with the aesthetics or function of your removable dentures, then we can restore your smile and chewing efficiency with dental bridges.

How are teeth replaced with dental bridges?

When you visit us to replace your missing teeth, our dentists will assess your oral health status and the condition of your existing teeth. This is because tooth bridges can only be used if the teeth which support them are perfectly sound and firmly anchored in the jawbone. If the supporting teeth have any cavities, they will be restored before attaching the bridge.

Tooth preparation – Tooth preparation is different for each type of dental bridge. In the case of conventional bridges, a thin layer of tooth structure is removed from the supporting teeth to create space for attaching the bridges. In the case of cantilever bridges, tooth preparation is only done on one side, while Maryland bridges do not require significant tooth preparation.
Tooth impressions – once tooth preparation has been completed, we will make an impression of your teeth and send it to the dental laboratory along with information regarding the type of bridge and the desired shade of the artificial teeth.
Attaching the bridge – when you visit us for your next appointment, we will attach the bridge to your teeth first without permanent bonding. If you and our dentists are satisfied with the aesthetics and fit, we will permanently bond it with adhesive resin cement.

What are the benefits of tooth bridges?

Dental bridges offer several advantages over removable dentures. Unlike dentures, bridges remain fixed to your teeth. Therefore, since they provide superior chewing efficiency, they allow you to eat all your favourite foods without any difficulty or inconvenience. In addition, highly aesthetic artificial teeth can be attached to the bridges, which gives you a beautiful smile and attractive personality.

Had my first appointment at Buckdon Dental Clinic last week for a check up, I was made to feel very comfortable from the moment I walked in. All staff were very courteous, and a thorough check up of my mouth and teeth was carried out, and another appointment made for the work I needed doing in less than 4 weeks. Short version; A huge thank you to Debbie, Georgiana and everybody else in the team. All of the staff at Buckden Dental Clinic are extremely welcoming, warm and friendly. If you are nervous about dentists, like I used to be, then this is 100% the place for you to go.The detailed version;I wanted to take the time to write a detailed review of Buckden Dental Clinic because of the impact it’s had on my life and confidence. I didn’t go to the dentist for a long time (over 15 years) and as you can imagine over time my dental hygiene got worse to the point I was both embarrassed about going to the dentist, and afraid of the amount work that might be required.The reception team are all lovely! They’re extremely friendly and inviting and got me seen and signed up on the same day when I called up one day for an emergency appointment due to an extremely bad toothache. I explained to them that I was nervous, and they paired me with Debbie whom they explained is fantastic with nervous patients.Debbie is an absolute star and immediately made me feel more relaxed and comfortable, dismissing any worries I had about my “bringing a dirty car to an MOT” mindset and immediately went to work in checking my teeth reassuring me that there wasn’t nearly as much work needed as what I had worked myself up into expecting. To put it into perspective how much Debbie has helped my mindset to allow me to relax, I had to catch myself nearly falling asleep during a filling!I was also referred to the clinic’s dental hygienist, Georgiana. This was probably the part I was least looking forward, worried about how much it was going to hurt. Georgiana is brilliant, she used plenty of numbing cream for my first session and would constantly check on me and re-assure me throughout the process - which was nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. The confidence difference I have in my teeth after the work Georgiana has done is night and day. I used to do my best to not let me teeth show in any situation, and now I can laugh and smile without needing to worry!Truly, I would like to thank everybody at the Buckden Dental Clinic for being so welcoming and completely changing my mindset about going to the dentist - and a special thank you to Debbie and Georgiana for the wonderful work you have done for me.

As always a very warm welcome, the orthodontist Natasha was just amazing so calming (I am a nervous patient) explained everything and put me at ease. I already had left a 5-star review after my first visit, but I don't think it does the service justice, so I wanted to elaborate.I have always been deathly afraid of dentists, to the point I hadn't been for 20 years, knowing my teeth were in bad shape. I had a crisis this year that I knew would result in me having to visit a dentists. I found Buckden highly recommended online, but I still thought I'd have the worst time. I knew I'd have to have a number of extractions, and a long treatment plan, which really scared me, I remember turning up for the first time, shaking and crying too scared to open the door I couldn't even sit in the waiting room!Anyway, I have now had those extractions. I have visited Buckden 6 times now, and I cannot express how grateful and thankful I am for Aishah (my dentist) and all the staff there who truly make me feel comfortable, calm, respected, and cared for from start to finish, I have never had a service I can recommend more.I can firmly say now that the terror has faded away, and I genuinely have full faith and full knowledge that I'm in the safest hands. If you're looking online for reviews like I was, deathly afraid, terrified of what it's going to be like, I couldn't recommend Buckden more. I had an appointment with dental hygienist team Georgiana & Kerry yesterday and was really impressed. I usually dread these visits but this time it was a completely different experience. Georgiana is not only very skilled and knowledgeable but also clearly loves her job which really came across. She explained everything in a way that was helpful and easy to understand, and gave me lots of great advice I can actually use. I left feeling much more positive than I ever have after a hygienist appointment - she made a real difference. Highly recommended!

From someone who has always struggled with odontophobia (fear of dental treatment and management) they are exceptionally mindful, patient and understanding professionals, always seeking my best interests.
