A crown is a restoration that covers, or “caps,” a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size, strengthening and improving the appearance of a tooth.

They are normally tooth coloured and are necessary when a tooth is generally broken down and fillings won’t solve the problem. If a tooth is cracked, a crown holds the tooth together to seal the cracks so the damage doesn’t get worse. Crowns are also used to support a large filling when there isn’t enough of the tooth remaining, attach a bridge, protect weak teeth from fracturing, restore fractured teeth, or cover badly shaped or discoloured teeth.

Crowns are stationary and are customarily indicated for teeth that have sustained significant loss of structure or to replace missing teeth. Crowns may be placed on natural teeth or dental implants.

Taking care of your crowns

Besides visiting your dentist and brushing twice a day, cleaning between your teeth is vital with crowns

Floss or interdental cleaners (specially shaped brushes and sticks) are important tools to remove plaque from the crown area where the gum meets the tooth. Plaque in that area can cause dental decay and gum disease.

Conventional procedure

Preparing and fitting a crown requires at least two appointments. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared normally under local anaesthetic, and an impression or mould is made of the tooth, and a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it whilst the crown is being made. At the subsequent visit, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is cemented or bonded into place.

CEREC procedure

With CEREC, the procedure of making a crown or inlay can be done in a single appointment, start to finish. For you, the patient, this means fewer injections, less drilling, no messy impressions, no temporary crown and less time out of your hectic schedule.

As an alternative to taking impressions, a camera is used to take a digital picture of your tooth. This whole process only takes a few minutes. Your dentist will then create your crown using the CEREC machine. The CEREC software takes a digital picture of your tooth and converts it into a 3-dimensional virtual model on the computer screen. Within a few minutes, your Dentist clicks a button, and your crown design data is sent to a separate milling machine. A ceramic block that matches your tooth shade is placed in the milling machine. About 10 – 20 minutes later, your all-ceramic, tooth-coloured crown is finished and ready to be cemented into place. Finally, your Dentist tries the crown in your mouth to ensure it fits correctly. The crown is then polished and bonded to your tooth.

Another visit yesterday, this time for a scan as part of ongoing treatment. As always I was greeted by 2 polite and friendly receptionists and seen without delay, the scan itself was quick and easy and everything was very well explained to me by the lovely Rachel. The premises are always pristine and it's generally such a wonderful place to go do the things none of us likes to do! ; ) 5 stars again ladies, keep it up. I would not go anywhere else.

I attended today as a new patient and I already knew they were great as my husband and son go there and I had been with them about 15 years ago too. Still excellent, if not even better! From the minute you walk in- the clinic is lovely, clean and welcoming, with super friendly and efficient receptionists to greet you. My dentist, Jade, was so kind, knowledgeable and friendly, and put me at ease despite having previous bad experiences and a fairly complex issue. I recently had an appointment with Georgiana Darabana, the hygienist at Buckden Dental Clinic, and I can honestly say I was so impressed.Georgiana is such a lovely person, really personable and she makes you feel completely at ease from the moment you sit down. She is incredibly gentle, yet so thorough in everything she does, and her professionalism shines through the entire appointment. You just know you are in very safe hands.The clinic itself is absolutely spotless, with such a clean, calm and pleasant feel to it. It really does make a difference when you walk into an environment like that, everything feels well looked after and thought through.Every single member of staff is warm, welcoming and so accommodating. I was absolutely petrified of going to the dentist. Due to Chemotherapy and other issues, my teeth were in very, very poor condition. Everyone at this dentist are amazing. My time with Debbie at Buckden Dental can only be described as one of the best things to ever happen for my self-esteem and self-confidence.When I first joined, my teeth were in a state of disrepair due to neglect, and I was extremely nervous about seeing a dentist. From day one, Debbie made me feel secure, safe, and genuinely acknowledged, without any judgement at all.After multiple treatments, my teeth have never been in better condition, and throughout every stage of the process she has been professional, knowledgeable, and reassuring. I will genuinely miss visiting her, and I want to extend this as a formal thank you for changing more than she may realise about how I see myself.A special shout out also to hygienist Georgiana who, again, understood my needs, what has led me to my situation, and for handling this with care and empathy.Otherwise, communication could definitely be improved, as could the booking of treatments and the overall management of the clinic. There are often very limited options on the portal for online-booked appointments, and when this was raised, I was told to call and book instead... making the online system rather inefficient if not all available time slots are actually offered. This makes booking appointments unnecessarily difficult for some, especially during working hours.I would strongly recommend improving accessibility for patients so they don’t have to rely on phone calls along with a small selection of appointments offered online. It shouldn’t be the patient’s responsibility to navigate unnecessary barriers just to book an appointment.A more streamlined running of the clinic would elevate this to six-stars instead of five.

I used to hate going to the dentist with a passion! However Debbie has been patient & worked with me. She's gotten to know me - I can now raise my hand & she will stop, immediately.She talks me through what's going to happen if it's out of the ordinary & checks in regularly. My teeth & gums are the best they've ever been! 0-1 bleed when she does the prick test. I no longer spit blood every time I brush.Genuinely, look forward to my dentist appointment to see how good my teeth are! The hyginest is wonderful too, very stern but has great advice & is understanding of anxiety.Reception is welcoming & friendly too. All in all, highly recommend & worth the money

My first appointment with Buckden Dental for a broken tooth. A very smart, modern reception/waiting area with very friendly knowledgeable reception staff. The appointment with Dr Kamaljit involved an examination, x-ray and a discussion on the treatment options available. The surgery itself was very modern and the equipment on display was very comprehensive and impressive. Dr Kamaljit explained everything to me clearly and calmly and was obviously a very knowledgeable professional.Overall, an excellent experience from an extremely well set up and friendly practice, from reception through to treatment.

Short version; A huge thank you to Debbie, Georgiana and everybody else in the team. All of the staff at Buckden Dental Clinic are extremely welcoming, warm and friendly. If you are nervous about dentists, like I used to be, then this is 100% the place for you to go.The detailed version;I wanted to take the time to write a detailed review of Buckden Dental Clinic because of the impact it’s had on my life and confidence. I didn’t go to the dentist for a long time (over 15 years) and as you can imagine over time my dental hygiene got worse to the point I was both embarrassed about going to the dentist, and afraid of the amount work that might be required.The reception team are all lovely! They’re extremely friendly and inviting and got me seen and signed up on the same day when I called up one day for an emergency appointment due to an extremely bad toothache. I explained to them that I was nervous, and they paired me with Debbie whom they explained is fantastic with nervous patients.Debbie is an absolute star and immediately made me feel more relaxed and comfortable, dismissing any worries I had about my “bringing a dirty car to an MOT” mindset and immediately went to work in checking my teeth reassuring me that there wasn’t nearly as much work needed as what I had worked myself up into expecting. To put it into perspective how much Debbie has helped my mindset to allow me to relax, I had to catch myself nearly falling asleep during a filling!I was also referred to the clinic’s dental hygienist, Georgiana. This was probably the part I was least looking forward, worried about how much it was going to hurt. Georgiana is brilliant, she used plenty of numbing cream for my first session and would constantly check on me and re-assure me throughout the process - which was nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. The confidence difference I have in my teeth after the work Georgiana has done is night and day. I used to do my best to not let me teeth show in any situation, and now I can laugh and smile without needing to worry!Truly, I would like to thank everybody at the Buckden Dental Clinic for being so welcoming and completely changing my mindset about going to the dentist - and a special thank you to Debbie and Georgiana for the wonderful work you have done for me.

I already had left a 5-star review after my first visit, but I don't think it does the service justice, so I wanted to elaborate.I have always been deathly afraid of dentists, to the point I hadn't been for 20 years, knowing my teeth were in bad shape. I had a crisis this year that I knew would result in me having to visit a dentists. I found Buckden highly recommended online, but I still thought I'd have the worst time. I knew I'd have to have a number of extractions, and a long treatment plan, which really scared me, I remember turning up for the first time, shaking and crying too scared to open the door I couldn't even sit in the waiting room!Anyway, I have now had those extractions. I have visited Buckden 6 times now, and I cannot express how grateful and thankful I am for Aishah (my dentist) and all the staff there who truly make me feel comfortable, calm, respected, and cared for from start to finish, I have never had a service I can recommend more.I can firmly say now that the terror has faded away, and I genuinely have full faith and full knowledge that I'm in the safest hands. If you're looking online for reviews like I was, deathly afraid, terrified of what it's going to be like, I couldn't recommend Buckden more. I had an appointment with dental hygienist team Georgiana & Kerry yesterday and was really impressed. I usually dread these visits but this time it was a completely different experience. Georgiana is not only very skilled and knowledgeable but also clearly loves her job which really came across.
