Why are dental extractions needed?

Dental extractions become necessary for various reasons

  • Decay or damage: When a tooth is severely decayed or damaged beyond repair, removing it is often the wisest course of action to prevent further issues.
  • Gum disease: In cases where gum disease has made a tooth loose and unstable, extraction can help protect the health of your other teeth.
  • Wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth, those final molars that typically emerge in your late teens or early twenties, can sometimes cause problems like infections or overcrowding. In such cases, removal might be recommended.
  • Orthodontic treatment: Teeth are sometimes removed from children’s mouths to help other teeth, which are crowded, grow straight, usually in conjunction with orthodontic treatment (teeth straightening).

The dental extraction process

Here’s what you can expect during a dental extraction at Buckden Dental Practice.

Anaesthesia

First and foremost, your comfort is our priority. We’ll ensure you’re completely numb in the area where the tooth will be removed. You may feel a slight pinch during the anaesthesia administration, but that’s usually the only discomfort.

Tooth removal

Using precise techniques, we gently and carefully remove the tooth. While you might feel some pressure or hear minor noises, you shouldn’t experience pain.

Stitches (if needed)

In certain situations, we may use dissolvable stitches to aid the healing process. These stitches don’t require removal.

Piezosurgery techniques

At Buckden Dental Clinic, we’re at the forefront of dental technology. We use state-of-the-art Piezosurgery techniques to make your experience even more comfortable and efficient. Traditional surgical methods, which involve cutting into the bone, can sometimes cause unnecessary damage to surrounding tissues. With Piezosurgery, we can complete procedures faster and more safely, resulting in less bleeding and tissue damage. This means quicker healing times, less discomfort, and better preservation of bone, which is especially beneficial for those considering dental implants.

Follow-up

Our team will ensure that any bleeding has ceased before you leave. If you have any concerns or complications during your recovery, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

After the extraction, proper care is crucial. Here are some post-extraction guidelines:

  • Avoid alcohol, hot foods, or disturbing the blood clot that forms on the day of the extraction.
  • Steer clear of smoking and strenuous exercise for the rest of the day.
  • Refrain from rinsing your mouth on the day of the extraction.
  • From the following day, rinse gently with warm, salty water after meals and before bed for about a week.
  • Continue your regular tooth-brushing routine, but be gentle around the extraction site.
  • If you experience discomfort, you can take over-the-counter painkillers as you would for a headache.
