Good oral hygiene is about more than just brushing twice a day. Many dental problems, including gum disease and tooth decay, begin in the spaces between the teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach. This is why interdental cleaning is such an important part of your daily routine.
By using either dental floss or interdental brushes, you can remove plaque, bacteria, and trapped food particles from these hard-to-reach areas, protecting your teeth and gums from long-term damage. Regular interdental cleaning not only helps to keep your breath fresh and your smile healthy, but it also reduces the risk of gum inflammation, bleeding gums, and periodontal disease.
With the right technique and tools, you can significantly improve your oral health and maintain a cleaner, brighter smile for life.
At Buckden Dental Clinic, our Hygiene Therapists and Oral Hygiene instructors can discuss and demonstrate these techniques with you. You can find a range of cleaning aids for purchase from reception.

The interdental brushed should offer some resistance when inserted, but should never be forced into the space. If the brush goes in too easily, it is likely too small and won’t be effective. Your dentist or hygienist will help advise you on the right brush sizes for you and show you how to use them properly. You might need different-sized brushes for the different gaps in between your teeth.
To reach further back in the mouth, bend the brush or use interdental brushes with longer handles. If you haven’t cleaned between your teeth in a while, your gums can feel sore and bleed when you start cleaning. Don’t stop – bleeding is a sign of inflammation caused by plaque, so it’s important to keep cleaning every day.
